Celebrates the Constitution Day - Dia de la Constitución

December 6th marks a pivotal day in Spain's history as the country celebrates Constitution Day, commemorating the 1978 referendum in which Spaniards voted overwhelmingly in favor of a new constitution. This vote laid the foundation for the democratic Spain we know today, marking a clear break from the era of Franco and paving the way for the nation’s modern democratic values.

Constitution Day

It wasn’t until 1983 that Constitution Day became an official public holiday through Royal Decree 2954/1983, and it has since become a symbolic occasion, celebrated annually with events organized by the Administration, the Armed Forces, and educational institutions.

The “Puente de diciembre”

In Spain, December 6th and December 8th - the latter being the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, an important day in Catholic tradition - combine to create the Puente de diciembre, or December long weekend. This break gives Spaniards a chance to enjoy time with family and friends while reflecting on both their cultural heritage and democratic milestones.

From parades to special ceremonies, and with schools and institutions taking part, Constitution Day serves not only as a holiday but as a reminder of Spain’s journey toward democracy and its dedication to preserving these values.
