Sports activities on the Costa del Sol

a popular destination for sports enthusiasts

The Costa del Sol is a popular destination for sports enthusiasts who are tempted by the all-year-round temperate climate, which is perfect for those who enjoy outdoor pursuits. In addition to the climate there is an abundance of beautiful countryside, national parks and coastlines that can be explored on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The weather is also perfect for off-season football training and tennis. Marbella in particular is the perfect place for tennis players who wish to fine tune their game, as there are many tennis clubs, academies and facilities to be enjoyed. Here are a few of our favourite sports facilities.

Golf

Marbella is at the heart of a stretch of coastline unofficially dubbed the ‘Costa del Golf’, so let’s kick off with the region’s most visible, and popular, sporting activity – golf.
At the last count, there were around 70 golf courses to choose from, many of which are ranked amongst the Europe’s best courses. There are also plenty of stunning golf resorts, offering golf lovers access to a fantastic array of golf apartments and golf villas for sale. Our experienced team can help you find the perfect golf property, as a holiday home, permanent residence or an investment property, that will deliver rental yields for years to come.

With so many superb celebrity-endorsed and designed, world-class courses along the Coast, here are three of our favourite courses in Marbella and nearby hillside village of Benahavís.

Water sports

The Costa del Sol's location on the Mediterranean Coast makes it an ideal destination for sailing enthusiasts. With over ten marinas dotted along the coast, there are plenty of opportunities for enjoying the thrill of the sunshine, sea spray and wind on your face.  You can charter a boat, take an organised trip or secure a mooring for your own vessel. There are also several sailing schools, catering for all levels of aptitude from beginners to those with a modicum of experience and want to refine their skills.

Cycling

Málaga’s stunning countryside, national parks, hill trails and promenades offer some superb cycling routes. Some will be perfect for beginners, whilst others have a higher level of difficulty and should only be tackled if you are fit and experienced. If a mountain ride isn’t your cup of tea, perhaps a gentle ride along one of the beachfront paths linking the coastal towns would be more enjoyable. What better way to explore the coastline, than cycling at your own pace along the sea front?

Walking and hiking

When we think of the Costa del Sol, we generally think of the beaches, but there is so much more to the region. If you travel just 10 minutes inland, you’ll find some wonderful undulating valleys, mountains, lakes and rivers, which make the perfect hiking trails. It is possible to take part in an organised hiking activity led by a professional guide, or to take your own routes in your own time. There are plenty of websites, for example Tripadvisor, outlining the trails and level of difficulty, so you can choose wisely, making sure you are suitably prepared.
